Quilt is a reactive, typed, cellular runtime. It takes the spreadsheet model — a grid of named, reactive cells — and turns it into a general-purpose runtime. A cell can be a value, a formula, a program, a sensor, an API, a listener, a router, or an IO port. The same sheet can be deployed to a browser, a server, an edge function, a microcontroller, or a peer-to-peer mesh. The cell model is uniform across all of them.

In Quilt, the grid is the runtime. There is no separate "application". You declare cells, the runtime propagates their values, and listeners fire when conditions are met. The sheet is the source of truth, the API surface, and the deployment artifact. The same file is a CLI command, a server endpoint, a Worker, and a microcontroller program.

Quilt is to traditional programming as spreadsheets are to calculators. You don't write a sequence of operations. You declare what depends on what. The runtime figures out when to recompute. This is a fundamentally different way of thinking about programs, and it enables a fundamentally different kind of tool.

The 8 cell kinds:

1. value — a static or user-settable value
2. formula — a small expression that references other cells
3. program — arbitrary code (JS, Python, WASM)
4. sensor — a real-time data source (camera, GPS, accelerometer)
5. api — an HTTP endpoint or model call
6. listener — a callback that fires on a condition
7. router — a dispatch cell that picks a downstream cell
8. io — a hardware port (serial, GPIO, BLE)

Plus the new AI cell with 7 sub-kinds (ai.llm, ai.embed, ai.image, ai.translate, ai.sentiment, ai.summarize, ai.code, ai.vision).

Quilt runs in TypeScript, Rust, a single HTML file (Quilt Live), and Cloudflare Workers. The same sheet runs across all of them. The cell model is the API. The runtime is the protocol. The mesh is the future.
